What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is a chronic disease that is rising in prevalence in the U.S. Studies estimate that sleep apnea afflicts as much as 24% of the U.S. population, with 80% going undiagnosed*. Sleep apnea can occur in people of all ages, race, ethnicity, and gender.
Common indicators of sleep apnea are: obesity (BMI over 35), daytime sleepiness, impaired cognition, mood disorders depression or irritability, insomnia, heart disease, history of stroke or high blood pressure, family history of sleep apnea, large neck size (+17 inches), loud snoring, episodes of breathing cessation during sleep, abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking, awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat, morning headache, nighttime sweating and decreased libido.
